Journey from Research Scientist to Science Communicator with Diana Hannikainen

Diana Hannikainen (Hosted by Michael Nowak) from Sky & Telescope will be presenting the Astrophysics & Space Sciences Seminar on Journey from Research Scientist to Science Communicator.

Dr. Diana Hannikainen became the 7th Editor in Chief of Sky & Telescope, the premiere magazine of Popular Astronomy, in November 2024.  She came to this role after previously serving since 2017 as the magazine's Observing Editor, where she authored features and columns, issued press updates on celestial events, and maintained a visible presence in the astronomy community--regularly attending star parties and meeting with amateur astronomers to foster connections between professionals and hobbyists.  Dr. Hannikainen began her career as a high energy astrophysicist studying black holes, and made seminal contributions to the field by being one of the first to describe the links between radio jets and X-ray emitting accretion flows in Galactic black hole systems.  She will talk about her journey from research scientist to science outreach and journalism, and talk about the role that Sky & Telescope plays in linking the amateur and professional astronomical communities.
