Raymond E. Arvidson, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor, won the 2022 Richard D. Schwartz Supportive Faculty Award from the St. Louis Astronomical Society (SLAS). The award recognizes Arvidson's contributions to SLAS' mission to educate the public about, encourage interest in, and disseminate knowledge of the science of astronomy. As a local educator, Arvidson has supported this mission by providing astronomy-related talks to SLAS and the St. Louis area.
The Supportive Faculty Award honors Richard Dean Schwartz (1941-2011), PhD, who was a professor of astronomy at the University of Missouri-St Louis (UMSL) from 1975 to 2003. In addition to building UMSL's astronomy and astrophysics program, Schwartz compiled a distinguished record of research that gave him an international reputation as an astrophysicist. During his career, Schwartz pioneered a new research area studying the energetic mass loss in young stars and amassed over 2000 citations to his 80 scientific papers. Schwartz became a member of SLAS shortly after coming to St Louis and would present his research at SLAS meetings.
