It has been nearly 50 years since the Viking 1 lander marked NASA's first successful mission to the surface of Mars. In the decades since, a number of spacecraft have explored the surface of our celestial neighbor. This presentation will discuss these missions, the challenges faced when operating a robot on the surface of Mars, and the deep connections between NASA's Mars Exploration Program and Washington University.
