David Fike elected to AAAS

David Fike, a member of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), one of the most distinguished honors in the scientific community. He is one of eleven Washington University in St. Louis faculty members selected this year.

AAAS, the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the Science family of journals, elected nearly 500 new fellows in recognition of their scientifically and socially distinguished achievements across disciplines. New fellows will be celebrated at a forum May 29 in Washington, D.C.

Fike, PhD, chair of Earth, environmental, and planetary sciences, is the Glassberg/Greensfelder Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences. He uses geochemical analyses to investigate the links between biological activity, geological processes and ambient environmental conditions today and to reconstruct how they have varied over Earth’s history. His research focuses on the occurrence of past ice ages and the rise of atmospheric oxygen, and their relationship to animal evolution and mass extinctions.

Election as an AAAS fellow is a lifetime honor, recognizing scientists whose contributions have advanced their fields and benefited society.
