Earth as a Planet
This research area encompasses studies of the Earth as an integrated system, often on a global scale and throughout its entire history. These studies provide essential context for understanding planetary systems within and beyond our Solar System. Major research foci include, but are not limited to: the origin and evolution of the Earth and the Moon; the structure, composition, dynamics, and evolution of the interior of the Earth including the origin of plate tectonics; the structure, composition, dynamics, and evolution of marine, terrestrial, and atmospheric systems on Earth; climate and the environment throughout Earth’s history, including in the recent past; and the origin and evolution of life.
