Solar Eclipse Viewing on Danforth Campus

The solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 begins in St. Louis at 12:42 pm and ends at 3:17 pm. Although it will not be a total eclipse on the Danforth Campus, it will be close, with the maximum eclipse of about 98% occurring at 2:00 pm.

Members of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences will host an eclipse-viewing event on the front steps of Brookings Hall on the Danforth campus of Washington University in St. Louis. This event is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Participants will be able to safely view the eclipse through a solar telescope which will also capture and project images of the eclipse onto a larger computer monitor, for further ease of viewing. 

In St. Louis, you will be able see a deep partial eclipse, with some amount of sky darkening. You’ll need to use your eclipse glasses for the entire event, and free eclipse-viewing sunglasses will be available.

In addition, other members of MCSS will be hosting an event at Bollinger Mill State Historic Site. Talks from that event and from the time of totality will be livestreamed as well.

This will be the last solar eclipse that will be viewable in the United States until 2044.
