Physics Theory Seminar with Aurel Bulgac on Superfluid Fermion Systems

Aurel Bulgac (Hosted by Sobotka/Pastore) from University of Washington will be presenting the seminar "Non-equilibrium dynamics of superfluid fermion systems within an extension of the time-dependent density functional theory: from cold atoms, to nuclei and neutron stars"

The density-functional theory (DFT) and the Schrödinger equation provide mathematical identical quantum descriptions of the one-body densities, with the proviso that neither the energy density functional nor the inter-fermion forces are always known with sufficient accuracy. While the exact or numerical solution of the Schrödinger equation for a many-fermion system is impossible, one can now solve the real-time DFT equations for superfluid fermion systems with the help of the most powerful supercomputers in the world. Bulgac will describe a series of applications to cold atoms, quantum shock waves, real-time generation and dynamics of quantized vortices along with their crossing a recombination and incipient phases of quantum turbulence, real-time nuclear fission and other nuclear processes, and pinning of vortices in neutron star crust.
